“Not even a little.” She sighs. “Can you tell him I said sorry? Let him believe I was wasted, though. I don’t want to …” She stops and shakes her head.

“Yeah, of course.”

I send the text and pull back out onto the road.

A million scenarios run through my head. Should I be taking her to the hospital? Home to her Mom? Whose ass am I kicking?

At the stop light, she whispers, “Sorry.”

“Don’t be sorry.” I tighten my grip on the wheel.

“I am.”

I press the gas as the light turns green and see her hand cover her belly as she looks ahead.

“Where’s Grace?” I ask, turning onto the road leading toward central campus.

“Tappy,” she answers softly. “Tyler.”

“Who’d you go out with?”

“Kate. You don’t—”

“Met her at the date night.”

“Oh.”

Ready to burst, I decide to let some pressure out of the figurative tire and ask, “She just left you there?”

“We aren’t close.”

“That shouldn’t matter. Everyone knows what goes down there. You shouldn’t have gone in the first place.”

“I didn’t want to be home alone tonight. Joe, one of my friends, he’s a brother.” I see her hand shake a bit. “He’s driving tonight. I thought he was gonna be there. He said he was gonna be there. I—”

“Breathe.” I pull over and take her hand. I see a tear fall. “Are you … okay?”

“Yeah.” She nods a little too vigorously. “Of course.”

“Nothing happened”—I swallow hard—“to you?”

“Nothing happened.” She pulls her hand away. It’s still shaking.

My phone rings—Smitty. I hit decline.

I get an immediate text and grab my phone to read rather than let the system read it to me.

At Deans. Gonna stay. Let us know if we need to kick any asses, or if you want us to come home with chocolate and tissues.
